USING DOGS AS A TOOL OF RACIST REPRESSION

USING DOGS AS A TOOL OF RACIST REPRESSION LIKE MANY aspects of modern policing, police dogs  have their historical roots in slavery and colonialism . Cuban bloodhounds were tools in the hands of professional slave catchers for recapturing and brutalizing fleeing slaves, and instruments of psychological terror to prevent others from trying to escape. From slavery to Jim Crow to the era of mass incarceration, attack dogs have been a continuous feature of anti-Black violence. It’s still the case today that police dogs are used disproportionately to maul and terrorize people of color. The Ferguson police department’s apartheid policy of dog attacks for Black people only isn’t unique. A 2013 report similarly found  that 100 percent of the victims of police dog bites in Los Angeles County in the first six months of that year were Black or Latino. The stark numbers show that no progress has been made in LA since former Police Chief Daryl Gates and the LAPD were sued by the ACLU

Recreating the Black Male Narrative

Recreating the Black Male Narrative Despite the negative connotations of African American males and the economic and societal hardships they experience, there are many examples of successful African American males who have persisted through the educational pipeline in stark contrast to the negative stereotypes and statistics. In various cities throughout the US, African American males are showing what is possible when we provide them with the resources and support needed to be successful. Organizations such as Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB), Brother-2-Brother (B-2-B), Boys 2 Kings, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Higher Achievement, have a wide array of goals that are accomplished through different programmatic features. However, we would like to highlight an initiative birthed in Milwaukee, WI that has transcended expectations and significantly impacted the lives of its Black male participants. This initiative is called the MKE Fellows.

DEMOCRATS' IMMIGRATION DOGMA IS DAMAGING AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITIES | OPINION

DEMOCRATS' IMMIGRATION DOGMA IS DAMAGING AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITIES | OPINION Immigrants—both legal and illegal—tend to congregate in large cities and take positions in the unskilled workforce. In fact, so many immigrants who lack high school diplomas have come to the U.S. in the past 20 years that they've increased the size of the low-skilled workforce by 25 percent.   That puts them in direct competition with African-Americans, who disproportionately occupy the low-wage urban labor market. Work from the eminent Harvard economist George Borjas shows that when immigration increases the size of the labor pool by 10 percent, wages for African American men drop 2.5 percent—and their employment rate declines by nearly 6 percent.  Likewise, a 2010 report from the U.S. Civil Rights Commission concluded that African American men are "more likely to be in labor competition with immigrants." Commissioner Peter Kirsanow emphasized how this competition can effective
