Police knew unarmed man was mentally ill before fatally shooting him, lawsuit says

Police knew unarmed man was mentally ill before fatally shooting him, lawsuit says A fatal police shooting of an unarmed black man that was captured by a bystander’s camera and sparked a protest in Tulare in March has resulted in a federal civil rights lawsuit. Anyka Harris has sued the city of Tulare, its police department and the officers who shot her 27-year-old son, Jontell Reedom. In the lawsuit, Harris’ lawyers, Dale Galipo and Bradley Kramer of Southern California, said police knew Reedom was mentally ill, so they should have used other methods to de-escalate the situation. The lawyers are seeking damages in U.S. District Court in Fresno for excessive force, wrongful death, negligence and inadequate police training. The shooting of Reedom, a former Tulare Union High School football standout, was captured on video by a bystander. It happened while tensions are high nationwide between law enforcement agencies and communities of color, following several high-profi

Still blackballed: American football's most recognisable exile

Still blackballed: American football's most recognisable exile 24 Aug 2018 It has been roughly 600 days since the embattled American football player, Colin Kaepernick, suited up to compete in the National Football League. Another season of the sport, which has effectively succeeded baseball as America's favourite sport, is due to kick off on September 6, without supremely skilled Kaepernick on an NFL roster. While marooned from the NFL, Kaepernick - and the movement he spearheaded at the beginning of his final season - remains a topic of popular sporting and political discussions. By kneeling during the US national anthem before each match, Kaepernick was standing against the structural racism pervading American streets, manifested most violently by the police brutality against unarmed black civilians. "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour," Kaepernick said to NFL media before the 2

Indiana principal apologizes after using N-word during schoolwide assembly

An Indiana principal issued an apology after he used the N-Word during a schoolwide assembly, reported Fox 59 news. Chuck Weisenbach said he was giving a speech about empathy and used the N-word as an example of a hurtful word that should not be used. “Among the list of words and phrases was the N-word. I, in no way, used the word in derogatory fashion, but instead to illustrate its ugliness,” Weisenbach said. He said he made a mistake in using the word as an example and apologized for offending students and faculty. “As educators, we are often tasked with discussing uncomfortable matters, especially as it related to race and discrimination,” said Weisenbach. He added, “I am deeply sorry and in no way intended for my attempt at educating our students to hurt anyone. I ask for your grace and forgiveness in this matter.” Listen to his audio apology below.

About 300 demonstrators gathered on Monday evening for a protest and march at the base of Silent Sam, a memorial erected in 1913 to soldiers of the pro-slavery Confederacy killed during the Civil War. Protesters pulled the statue down with rope, cheering as it lay face down in the mud, its head and back covered in dirt. Each of the three people faces misdemeanor charges of riot and defacing of a public monument, university police spokesman Randy Young said in an emailed statement. The three are not affiliated with the University of North Carolina, Young said. The police investigation is ongoing and there may be additional arrests, he said. The incident was part of a recent movement to dism
