How Racism Has Shaped the American Farming Landscape

How Racism Has Shaped the American Farming Landscape Farming in the United States is enmeshed with both racism and capitalism in a way that has had a profound impact on who owns, accesses, and benefits from farmland. Recently, I  published research  with Portland State University student Amy Marion examining data on  non-farming landowners ,  farmers who own and lease land , and  farmworkers . We found significant racial/ethnic disparities when it comes to representation, land, and money. Perhaps not surprisingly to those familiar with  structural racism in the food system , we found that white Americans are most likely to own land and benefit from the wealth it generates. From 2012 to 2014, white people comprised over 97 percent of non-farming landowners, 96 percent of owner-operators, and 86 percent of tenant operators. They also generated 98 percent of all farm-related income from land ownership and 97 percent of the income that comes from operating farms. On the other hand

Police investigating after men unfurl 'It's OK to be white' banner at BBL cricket match

Police investigating after men unfurl 'It's OK to be white' banner at BBL cricket match West Australian police say they are investigating after three men unfurled an “It’s OK to be white” banner at a Big Bash League match in Perth on Thursday. The men, aged 50, 24 and 38, were ejected after unfurling the banner at Thursday night’s match between the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder. It was displayed from the stadium’s top tier for several minutes before it was taken down and the three men were ejected. In a statement, WA police said they had issued a formal move-on notice to the men. A police spokesman said the incident was “currently under investigation”. On Friday, Cricket Australia said it had issued a “first and final warning” to the men, but did not issue a fine or a ban following the incident. CA said it took a “zero-tolerance approach” to racial vilification but it did not issue a fine or ban to any of the men involved. “Three people in ques

Right-wing Extremists Murdered 50 Americans in 2018, Report Finds - and One-third of Them Were Jews

Right-wing Extremists Murdered 50 Americans in 2018, Report Finds - and One-third of Them Were Jews At least 50 Americans were killed by extremists in 2018, according to a report published on Wednesday by the Anti-Defamation League. The report noted that in each and every one of the 17 incidents involved, the killers were affiliated with right-wing groups, in most cases white supremacy movements. At least 16 of the victims, representing one-third of the total, were Jewish – 11 of them shot at a Pittsburgh synagogue in late October and five of them at a mass shooting at a Florida high school in February. The number of Americans murdered by extremists was 35 percent higher in 2018 than in the previous year, but lower than in 2015 and 2016, according to the report. However, 2018 saw the largest number of fatalities attributed to right-wing extremists since 1995, the year that Timothy McVeigh bombed the Oklahoma City federal building. Guns were responsible for 42 of the

Super Bowl half time performers stir up controversy

Super Bowl half time performers stir up controversy The Super Bowl LIII halftime show performers were officially announced, and it’s stirring up some controversy. Pop group Maroon 5 will headline the halftime show, and rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi will join the band.  Super Bowl LIII is set to air at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3 on CBS. Seven-time Grammy Award winning R&B and soul artist, Gladys Knight, will be performing the national anthem before kickoff. Sisters and R&B duo, Chloe x Halle will be performing “America the Beautiful” during the pregame.  Finding a performer to headline the Super Bowl halftime was a bit difficult for the NFL this time around. Many artists including Cardi B, who was featured on Maroon 5’s 2018 No.1 hit “Girls Like You,” Jay-Z and Rihanna declined to perform at the event in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. The former 49ers quarterback, Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest racially-charged police brutali

RIP to the Super Bowl halftime show, no longer a cultural institution

After months of reports that many of America’s biggest stars had turned down the halftime show slot, news broke that Maroon 5 would be performing at the game on Feb. 3. As fans wrote petitions urging the band not to play in the show, the NFL delayed officially announcing the halftime show lineup for months, waiting until mid-January – weeks before the game – to actually confirm Maroon 5 would be playing. And when the rapper Travis Scott recently announced he would be joining Maroon 5 on the stage, he affirmed that he only agreed to perform if the NFL made a donation to a social justice organization, and yet still received criticism for signing on to the show.
