WHITE PRIVILEGE

Data collected by the  Washington Post  on the use of lethal force by police officers since 2015 indicate that, relative to the portion of the population, Blacks are over-represented among all those killed by police  under all circumstances . As is evident in Figure 1 below, (looking at the top blue bar) according to the US Census estimates, Blacks made up 13% of the population. However, in 2015 they accounted for 26% of those that were killed by police, in 2016, 24%, and in 2017, 23% of all those killed by police. In other words, Blacks were the victims of the lethal use of force by police at nearly twice their rate in the general population. Whites make up the plurality of victims of police use of lethal force (47% in 2017),  BUT  they also make the majority of the population (61% in 2018). For the first half of 2018, Blacks make up 20% of all those killed by police under all conditions. The “other” category for so far in 2018 is noticeably larger than previous years. Currently, 8

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger wants more done to stamp out racism in football: 'I wish other clubs follow our example'

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger wants more done to stamp out racism in football: 'I wish other clubs follow our example' Antonio Rudiger  says he has a lot in common with  Manchester City  star  Raheem Sterling  over suffering racist abuse and has challenged clubs to follow  Chelsea ’s lead in clamping down on fans who target players. Chelsea face Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday for the first time since Sterling was on the receiving end of offensive comments during the League game at Stamford Bridge in December. Four supporters were suspended by Chelsea from attending their matches pending further investigation from the police. While all four denied there was a racial theme behind the attack, it is understood the inquiry into their behaviour is still ongoing. There have been incidents at other clubs involving members of the crowd this season. West Ham are the latest to come under scrutiny after a clip was posted on social media of racial abuse being aimed a

‘Overtly racist’: Virginia students display Confederate flags during Spirit Week

‘Overtly racist’: Virginia students display Confederate flags during Spirit Week BEDFORD, VA (WDBJ) - Many expressed outraged after a social media post showed students posing with Confederate flags at Jefferson Forest High School. The post has been shared more than a thousand times. “This is a wound that’s been allowed to feaster,” said parent Lyman Connor. “It was people walking the halls with Confederate Flags ... in the cafeteria.” http://www.tucsonnewsnow.com/2019/02/07/overtly-racist-virginia-students-display-confederate-flags-during-spirit-week/

Another Southlake Caroll Racist Video

Video submitted to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram shows students in Southlake, Texas saying the n-word including two Southlake Caroll students. In Oct 2018, a similar video was circulated of students at a Southlake school chanting the n-word. The notion of different cultures melting into one has been applied to America almost since its founding. But with almost every new day we’re besieged by old thinking. There are simply a lot of base elements in this melting pot that have yet to soften. Thus, a second disturbing Internet video of at least one white Southlake Carroll student chanting the n-word repeatedly in a car with several other youths — including one other Carroll student — after a similar video shocked the community and the conscience last fall. #whytheracecardisplayed

Cub Scout Takes A Knee During Pledge Of Allegiance

Video of the meeting shows Liam Holmes drop down. The council invited Cub Scout Pack 451 to lead the pledge. Liam said he is a Cub Scout. "What I did was took a knee against racial discrimination, which is basically when people are mean to other people of different colors," said Liam. His dad, Scott Holmes, said he talked to Liam about it beforehand, but he wasn't sure if he'd follow through. "When he did it I was really surprised and also really proud of him," Scott Holmes said. "No one saw it except the people that were watching. And the mayor noticed and he thanked me," Liam said. https://whytheracecardisplay.wixsite.... #imwithliamholmes

Missouri teacher in hot water after making racist comments to students SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri school district says a substitute teacher was escorted out of a school after he was accused of making racist and threatening comments to two black students. The Springfield News-Leader reports that parent Jean Hawkins says the substitute told her eighth-grade son and a classmate last month that "black boys are nothing but trouble" and that he "was told to shoot you black boys." Springfield Public Schools spokesman Stephen Hall described the comments as "disturbing." He said the substitute is banned from working in the district. The district also notified its contractor for substitute teachers, Penmac Education Staffing. Penmac said in a statement that there's "no tolerance for such behavior." The substitute is suspended pending an investigation. The substitute's name hasn't been released.

Florida Republican caught in blackface refuses to resign — and says he was just impersonating his friend

Florida Republican caught in blackface refuses to resign — and says he was just impersonating his friend On Wednesday, another member of Virginia’s top democratic leadership was revealed to have worn black face when he was younger. That—combined with accusations of sexual assault against Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax—left open the possibility that a Republican could be left in power. As pundits wondered how three top Democrats could be so profoundly compromised, a Florida Republican who dressed up in black face in high school refused to step down. On Tuesday, Florida Democratic Chair Terry Rizzo called on Sabatini to resign, reports the  Orlando Sentinel. https://www.rawstory.com/2019/02/florida-republican-caught-blackface-refuses-resign-says-just-impersonating-friend/

Dying while black: Perpetual gaps exist in health care for African-Americans

Dying while black: Perpetual gaps exist in health care for African-Americans It is well documented that   African-Americans   experience   excess mortality , or deaths beyond the expected mortality rate. However, even if disparities in the mortality rate for African-Americans were rectified tomorrow, the fact remains that we will all eventually die. And how we die matters.

How Does a California Department of Justice Review of the Sacramento Police Department Impact the Stephon Clark Case?

How Does a California Department of Justice Review of the Sacramento Police Department Impact the Stephon Clark Case? Last week, the California Department of Justice released a report and recommendations for improvements within the Sacramento Police Department specifically pertaining to its use-of-force policy. The 97-page “ Sacramento Police Department Report & Recommendations 2019 ” (pdf) was released just days after the state DOJ turned over the findings from its independent investigation of the shooting and killing of Stephon Clark by two Sacramento police officers in March 2018. Upon receiving the DOJ’s investigation report on Tuesday, District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert’s office announced there would be a delay in her decision as to whether the two officers will be criminally charged in Clark’s death. Blackface Is the Tip of the IcebergThe structural problems we need to solve lie at the roots of Ame

Blackface Is the Tip of the IcebergThe structural problems we need to solve lie at the roots of Ame Over the last month, we’ve learned just how much racism is too much to sustain a career in American politics. It took almost 16 years for House Republicans to reprimand Steve King of Iowa for his frequent expressions of explicit racism, stripping him of his committee assignments . The catalyst? An interview with The New York Times in which he expressed sympathy with racist ideas. “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?” King said. Compare that slow-moving response with the quick dismissal of Michael Ertel, the Republican secretary of state in Florida, who resigned the same day that photos of him in blackface were revealed to the public. Taken at a Halloween party in 2005 , they show Ertel with a painted face and a costume that make clear he was mocking survivors of Hurricane Katrina. The reaction after the

Editorial | Kaepernick hasn’t left. Neither should Penn’s criminal justice reform efforts. Last year, Penn celebrated when the  Philadelphia Eagles became the Super Bowl LII champions.  This year, as the country again turns to watch the top NFL teams contend for a championship, attention on  Colin Kaepernick’s protests against racist police practices  has been renewed. While the Super Bowl may be the only time some pay attention to these issues, police brutality and structural racism are not distant phenomena for many on and near Penn’s campus. The Super Bowl this year and Kaepernick’s movement should be a wake-up call to the Penn community. These issues may seem distant and abstract to a lot of Penn students; however, structural and institutional racism in the police force and the criminal justice system are a daily reality for many people of color, including Penn students, faculty, and staff, as well as the wider-Philadelphia community.

Blackface scandal spotlights deeply embedded racism in US

Blackface scandal spotlights deeply embedded racism in US When Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam refused to resign last week, he did so in the shadow of a Capitol built by a founding father and a slave owner, in the former seat of the Confederacy still wrestling with what to do about statues that honor those who fought to preserve slavery. The 35-year-old  photo on his yearbook page  of a person in blackface and another person in a Ku Klux Klan robe has brought about a stunning reversal of fortune in Northam’s political career and laid bare for the nation just how deeply racist behavior remains interwoven in American culture, institutions and politics. In rejecting calls to step down, the 59-year-old white son of Virginia came across to many African-Americans as displaying a sense of white privilege.
