The fractured politics of a browning America

The US is getting more diverse. As more Americans realize this new future, it is changing how cultural and political divides take shape. We live in an America where television programs, commercials, and movies are trying to represent a browner country; where Despacito, a Spanish-language song, tops the Billboard charts and where NFL players kneel during the national anthem to protest police brutality. We live in an America where politicians on the right and left appeal to voters, with explicit references to race. And researchers are now able to pinpoint how these indirect and direct are shifting political ideology. Racial battle fatigue and activist burnout in racial justice activists of color at predominately White colleges and universities

Activist burnout scholarship has inadequately considered challenges marginalized-identity activists, such as racial justice activists of color, experience in the course of their activism – challenges from which privileged identity activists, such as white racial justice activists, are protected. This article attempts to address this gap through a phenomenological study examining activist burnout in racial justice activists of color whose primary sites of activism are predominantly white colleges and universities in the United States at which they work. In order to stretch activist burnout theory to differentiate unique marginalized-identity activists’ burnout causes from general causes that do not consider specific activist identities, the lens of racial battle fatigue is employed. Findings show that, although participants shared many causes of burnout that are consistent with general non-identity-specific causes described in existing literature, racial battle fatigue hastened thei...

The Dangerous Racialization of Crime in U.S. News Media

Whether intentionally or not, the news media has amplified national-level fear through its reporting on President Trump. Because national crime perception is an abstract concept, it is likely that the news media plays an outsized role in shaping the public’s imagination. Indeed, the news media not only contributes to the public’s overestimation of crime through how it reports on the president’s controversies, but it also overreports on violent crime—feeding destructive racial and ethnic biases about those responsible.

Louisiana officer who shared a racist meme is now the police chief

Estherwood, Louisiana (CNN)A Louisiana police officer almost resigned from his job after sharing a racist Facebook meme. Then, he became his town's police chief. Almost two years ago, Wayne Welsh, then assistant police chief of Estherwood, came across a meme on Facebook and shared it. The image depicted a white woman pushing the face of a white girl underwater in a bathtub. "When your daughters (sic) first crush is a little negro boy," the meme reads. Welsh was suspended from his job after sharing it, and he later apologized. When the spot for police chief was vacated last year, he was the interim for nine months. He ran unopposed for police chief last November. The village is predominantly white, and less than 5% of the population is African-American, according to the 2010 census. Six black residents declined to be interviewed on the record, saying they feared retaliation. Welsh declined to be interviewed. He sent a text message to CNN, saying he doesn't think ...

NEW MARKET, Tenn. — A racist symbol found spray-painted near a building destroyed by fire at a social-justice center in Tennessee has been displayed by white supremacists here and abroad, including the man accused of livestreaming the massacre of worshippers at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the main office Friday of the Highlander Center, an internationally known social-justice organization that hosted prominent leaders, including the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, during the civil-rights movement of the 1950s and '60s. The building, about 25 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee, in New Market, housed archives documenting the Highlander Center's history. It's unclear what documents were destroyed; the Wisconsin Historical Society preserves the center's documents and said the majority of the archives are safe.  In a news release Tuesday, the Highlander Center announced that a "symb...

Moise Kean celebrates in front of the Cagliari fans who racially abused ...

LONDON -- Yaya Toure has said Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci and manager Massimiliano Allegri are "a disgrace" for their criticism of forward Moise Kean's celebration in the face of racist abuse from Cagliari fans. Kean celebrated his 85th-minute goal in Tuesday's Serie A match at Sardegna Arena by standing in front of Cagliari supporters with his arms outstretched, having earlier endured monkey chants from the stands. He was criticised by teammate Bonucci and manager Allegri after the game and Toure, speaking during a panel discussion at UEFA's Equal Game conference on Wednesday, said: "For me it's a disgrace. You can't do that. "It was unbelievable. A teammate, a manager saying: 'You shouldn't have done that' to one of your own players. "I think it's the worst scenario you can have in football. Your teammate attacking you, saying things like that, is just unbelievable. I can't imagine how hurt he was when he sa...

Leftist Students Support Segregation

This is unbelievable. Leftist students (and white supremacists) think segregation is just great. Meanwhile, in the decent and civilized world, the rest of us know it isn't. Thanks for enlightening us, Ami Horowitz. https://www.whytheracecardisplayed.com/

How American Jews Became Israeli Settlers

There are some 60,000 American citizens living as settlers in the West Bank. In a new book, City on a Hilltop, historian Sara Yael Hirschhorn tries to understand what brought those Americans to the most contentious real estate on earth—and how their presence there shapes the tangled landscape of Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The American Church’s Complicity in Racism

How Reconstruction Still Shapes American Racism

Today, many of us know precious little about what happened during those years. But, regardless of its brevity, Reconstruction remains one of the most pivotal eras in the history of race relations in American history — and probably the most misunderstood.

SEAHAWKS DOUG BALDWIN CALLS OUT RACIST HIGH SCHOOL SIGN!

ISSAQUAH, Wash. - A high school student in Issaquah is being called out by a Seahawks player for using a racist sign to ask her date to 'tolo'. 'Tolo,' sometimes known as 'Sadie Hawkins,' is a dance where young women traditionally ask young men to be their date, instead of the other way around. The girl used a sign that said, "If I were black, I'd be picking cotton but instead, I pick you. Tolo?" The school has not identified the student who posted the message. Seahawk wide receiver Doug Baldwin tweeted the picture and said he was saddened that this idea was thought of and executed without intervention. Baldwin is one of many who are calling attention to the photo, and the Issaquah School District's spokeswoman has responded. "It was heartbreaking, it was absolutely heartbreaking. We're going to do a methodical, deliberate, intentional investigation," said ISD's spokeswoman. #whytheracecardisplayed

Billboard pulls Lil Nas X song 'Old Town Road' from country music charts

Lil Nas X’s seemingly-overnight success also came with controversy. Earlier this week, Billboard pulled the song from the Hot Country Songs chart, telling a representative for Columbia Records that its initial inclusion was a mistake, according to Rolling Stone. The decision resulted in an online backlash, with some saying that Lil Nas X’s exclusion continued country music’s troubled history of turning its back on black artists. The song received support from Justin Bieber, and Texas Tech celebrated a win during March Madness by dancing to it. “Old Town Road” came after a period of feeling like I was out of options. I was living with my sister. She was pretty much fed up with me being there. That’s where the chorus lyric came from—it was me saying, “I want to leave everything behind.” But during the month of me making [it], I gave it a different meaning, so that the “Old Town Road” would be the symbol for success. The horse would be not having too much, but having what you have, in...
