California rapper sleeping in car killed by punk police who opened fire

Police said they saw a handgun in the man's lap, and that after he woke up he did not respond to repeated commands to put his hands up. The family of a young Bay Area rapper who was killed when police officers opened fire after he had fallen asleep in his car is demanding the release of police bodycam footage and questioning whether deadly force was justified. Police in Vallejo, California, said in a news releasethat the six officers shot "multiple rounds" at the driver — identified by his family as Willie McCoy, 20 — in the span of four seconds Saturday night in a Taco Bell parking lot. It's unclear how many bullets struck McCoy, but his family said they believe at least 20 may have hit his car based on the number of holes that witnesses counted at the scene. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna... #whytheracecardisplayed

Meet the former federal prosecutor who wants to abolish prisons

Meet the former federal prosecutor who wants to abolish prisons Despite those noble sentiments, today, there is a criminal class in the US. It’s disproportionately comprised of African American and Latino men, says Butler. Between 1980 and 2015, the number of people incarcerated in the US increased from roughly 500,000 to over 2.2 million. The US, home to about 5% of the world’s population, now accounts for 21% of the world’s prisoners. According to the  NAACP , in 2014, about 34% of that US prison population was made up of African-Americans. Blacks and hispanics constituted 56% of individuals incarcerated in 2015, but only 32% of the total US population. https://qz.com/1549163/meet-the-ex-federal-prosecutor-who-wants-to-abolish-prisons/

February 15, 2019 Kaepernick reaches settlement with NFL Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reid have reached settlements with the NFL over their cases alleging collusion, their lawyers and the league announced Friday. Both men alleged that the NFL and team owners colluded to freeze them out of the league for kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality. The players' lawyers and the league said they have decided to resolve the players' grievances. "For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialogue with representatives of the NFL. As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances," attorneys Mark Geragos and Ben Meiselas said in a joint statement.  #whytheracecardisplayed

Man who admitted to racist, post-Katrina triple shooting receives 10-year prison sentence

Man who admitted to racist, post-Katrina triple shooting receives 10-year prison sentence A federal judge handed a 10-year prison sentence Thursday to a white man who admitted that he shot three black men in a racist attack during Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, ending the last open case involving civil rights abuses in New Orleans immediately following the 2005 storm. Roland Bourgeois, 56, received his punishment four months after he struck a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to a hate crime and to illegally using a weapon. The deal meant U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon would sentence him to between five and 10 years in prison, and she opted for the top of that range. https://www.theadvocate.com/new_orleans/news/crime_police/article_61b9caae-3082-11e9-801d-57f518e8dfc9.html

Oscar Contender 'A Night at the Garden' Shows American Nazi Rally in NYC

Oscar Contender 'A Night at the Garden' Shows American Nazi Rally in NYC It's an unlikely Oscar contender. Marshall Curry's "A Night at the Garden" has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. The film, entirely comprised of archival footage, shows a 1939 rally of American Nazis at New York City's Madison Square Garden. The rally drew 20,000 people on the eve of World War II. "The lesson of the film," Curry told InsideEdition.com, is that "we are vulnerable to leaders who will stir us up against each other. https://www.insideedition.com/media/videos/oscar-contender-night-garden-shows-american-nazi-rally-nyc-50762

Donald Trump’s long history of racism, from the 1970s to 2019

Donald Trump’s long history of racism, from the 1970s to 2019 Trump has repeatedly claimed he’s “the least racist person.” His history suggests otherwise. This long history is important. It would be one thing if Trump simply misspoke one or two times. But when you take all of Trump’s actions and comments together, a clear pattern emerges — one that suggests that bigotry is not just political opportunism on Trump’s part but a real element of Trump’s personality, character, and career. Trump has a long history of racist controversies Here’s a breakdown of Trump’s history, taken largely from  Dara Lind’s list for Vox  and an  op-ed by Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times : https://www.vox.com/2016/7/25/12270880/donald-trump-racist-racism-history

David Stern: Colin Kaepernick would still be playing if he were in NBA

David Stern: Colin Kaepernick would still be playing if he were in NBA Former NBA Commissioner David Stern said during a Bloomberg Business of Sports podcast that former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick would still be working today if he were a basketball player. According to Bloomberg , Stern said on the podcast, which will air Feb. 18, letting players speak their mind was part of the NBA's game plan to make the sport more visible. "As we were digging out of a terrible hole for us -- in the late ’70s and ’80s, when there was a fair amount of racism exhibited about players -- we felt as a matter of policy we had to promote our players and show that they were real people,” he said during the podcast. “And it worked.” Kaepernick, 31, hasn't played in the NFL since 2016 when he started kneeling during the national anthem as a protest against racial inequality and police brutality. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2019/02/14/colin-kaepernick-david-stern-nba

Fox News Bans Ad For Documentary About American Nazi Rally in 1939

The 30-second ad, titled “It Can Happen Here,” was supposed to run during the Sean Hannity Show earlier this week. The ad was bought to air during Monday night’s edition of Sean Hannity’s primetime show through a local advertising buy on Charter Communication’s Spectrum service in Los Angeles, but was precluded by breaking news — coverage of President Trump’s rally in Texas. The film’s distributor, Field of Vision, then decided to purchase a national spot on Hannity’s show, but was rebuffed by the network, which controls national advertising. The 7-minute movie, which was recently nominated for an Academy Award, explores the terrifying day on February 20, 1939 when thousands of American Nazis held a rally at Madison Square Garden in New York. “The ad in question is full of disgraceful Nazi imagery regardless of the film’s message and did not meet our guidelines,” Marianne Gambelli, president of ad sales at Fox News, told Gizmodo in a statement emailed by Fox News PR. Governor Northam’s Troubling Silence on Racism

Governor Northam’s Troubling Silence on Racism Blackface was never about mimicking black people. White entertainers wore it to amuse white crowds by playing into the most offensive and dehumanizing stereotypes. It is not simply the darkening of one’s face to look more like black people. It also involves exaggerating the physical features and movements of black people to the point of absurdity. Even if your grandparents took you to a vaudeville show decades ago, you have to know that these racist spectacles are deeply offensive. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/13/opinion/governor-northams-troubling-silence-on-racism.html

Africans who fought for British army paid less than white soldiers

Africans who fought for British army paid less than white soldiers “The colonial regime placed a different value on African life than it did on European life,” said Prof Timothy Parsons, one of the world’s leading authorities on Britain’s east African army, who is calling on the government to redress the injustices exacted on these soldiers by British rule. “There may be an opportunity to right some wrongs. It wouldn’t cost a great deal of money per individual.” Once a soldier was demobilized, Britain paid him a lump sum known as a war gratuity, calibrating the exact amount to the racial hierarchy enshrined in its African empire. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/13/african-british-army-paid-less-than-white-soldiers?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

OUTRAGE as Colin Kaepernick SNUBBED by Republicans over Black History Month resolution COLIN Kaepernick was removed from a resolution that would include him on a list of influential black leaders yesterday, sparking an outraged response from Democratic lawmakers. Wisconsin Republicans removed any mention of the former NFL quarterback come social activist from their resolution to honour Black History Month - which is this month. The former NFL player sparked controversy when he instigated a practice known as "taking the knee", where professional American Football players are encouraged to kneel during the national anthem in protest against police brutality towards people of colour. The State Assembly had originally passed the resolution to include Mr Kaepernick in the Black History month recognition until state Republicans blocked the resolution. https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1086480/Colin-Kaepernick-black-history-month-nfl-Wisconsin-state-assembly-black-lives-m

White privilege workshop shouldn't have been cancelled

I am disappointed to read Loren Glass' editorial that under pressure from the Republican-led Legislature, the University of Iowa decided to cancel a series of spring workshops that would help better understand white privilege [Refusing to talk about white privilege helps maintain it]. The fact that the university felt a need to cancel the workshops because of concerns from the "broader community and stakeholders" is a pretty huge indicator that these workshops are greatly needed. I attended the White Privilege Symposium at Drake a couple of years ago, and it has been the single most valuable wake-up experience in my life. I had no idea. I am grateful to Drake for offering it. However, we don't need to wait for the University of Iowa to offer the workshop.  We can buy Robin DiAngelo's book "White Fragility" and read it and pledge to wake up.  This might just be the greatest gift we as Iowans could give to each other. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.

Noose photo displayed in New York classroom draws action from school district #whytheracecardisplayed A school district on Long Island, New York, says it has taken "appropriate action" against teachers at a middle school for the display of "racially offensive images" featuring nooses in a classroom that has prompted a call from community leaders for their termination. A photo, part of a larger collage on display in a classroom, showed two nooses under the term "back to school necklaces." The words "ha" and "#yes" also appear in the photo. The Roosevelt School District said in a statement this weekend that it is aware of the "inappropriate conduct" of an "isolated group of teachers" at Roosevelt Middle School. "The Board of Education was made aware of this incident on Thursday Feb. 7, 2019," the district said. "An investigation was immediately initiated, and appropriate action taken."

Antisemitic attack part of a growing trend of “extremely worrying” behaviour

Antisemitic attack part of a growing trend of “extremely worrying” behaviour Australia’s Jewish community is disgusted by the latest targeted antisemitic attack, which they say is part of a growing racist trend across the country. More than 30 swastikas were found emblazoned on various sites across Bondi on Sunday morning and the “disturbing” graffiti is clearly a targeted attack given the seaside suburb is home to a large Jewish community, says Australian Jewish Association president Dr David Adler. https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/antisemitic-attack-part-of-a-growing-trend-of-extremely-worrying-behaviour/news-story/5bcf1407e5589db5cc237bf77f91c95c
