Cultural Appropriation in the Tattoo Industry: Art or Racism?

He had a client requesting a tattoo cover up design of a skull in a headdress. He had realized it could be offensive, and called me for advice. I explained to him how a literal portrait of a dead indian romanticizes the genocide of indigenous peoples. I confirmed it is indeed offensive and explained why (check the resources at the bottom of this page to learn about it!) He listened, asked questions, and didn’t argue with me. He mentioned he’d made some other designs that would work for the cover up and would be presenting them to the client. I gave him some links and resources that he could have handy to refer to when explaining to the client how the original design is problematic at best.

HOLLYWOOD REJECTED THIS SHOW

This black owned animation studio is the No.1 Trending company on Wefunder and we are here for it! @blacksandsentertainment has been working on their series Black Sands, the Seven Kingdoms for the last three years. After numerous successful kickstarters, the launch of their DVD, and major partnerships with industry veterans, they decided to raise capital for their company to expand. The results were incredible. In just a week since their launch, they have raised over $240,000 dollars and have over 600 investors from the black community. When asked about their success, the CEO Manuel Godoy states, "I guess black people are sick and tired of slave movies." Funny, since their literal slogan is "No more slave movies, time for kings!" Want to know what racism feels like?

Yet again, I think the conclusion is that people of colour need to be EVEN more creative in the way they talk about their experiences to snowflakes. Just spitballing here, but would it help if they got caught up in a celebrity divorce, then had a crap album to promote? Because I feel like then it might finally be permissible for them to speak. Until then, his message is clear: you’re still doing it wrong, guys! Pipe down.
