City fires officer who fatally shot unarmed man

City fires officer who fatally shot unarmed man A 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia police force will be fired for violating department policy in the fatal shooting of an unarmed Black man two days after Christmas, top Philadelphia police officials say. In late December, police were chasing a car driven by Dennis Plowden, a 25-year-old resident of East Germantown. Authorities believed his car was linked to a homicide. Even though Plowden was not involved in the slaying, he attempted to elude police — possibly because of an open warrant for unpaid tickets. The chase ended with Plowden crashing into a police vehicle before speeding away and hitting two parked vehicles. At that point, four officers surrounded Plowden, who had stumbled out of the car and was sitting on a curb with one arm behind his back. Plowden looked dazed and disoriented, police said. Three of them took cover to assess the situation, but Officer Eric Ruch opened fire. A single bullet pierced Plowden’s hand and struck his …

Idaho teachers mocked Mexicans and dressed up as a border wall for Halloween party A group of Idaho teachers mocked Mexicans and dressed up as President Donald Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border during a Halloween party this week. LocalnewsstationKTVBreports that photos of the teachers dressed both as a giant wall with a “Make America Great Again” slogan written across it and as Mexicans in mustaches and sombreros were actually posted on the school’s Facebook page before online backlash forced them to take them down. Dr. Josh Middleton, the Middleton School District’s superintendent, posted a public apology on the school’s Facebook page in the wake of community outrage over the photos. “I was shown those photos and [was] deeply troubled by the decision by our staff members to wear those costumes that are clearly insensitive and inappropriate,” he says in the video. “We are better than this. We embrace all students. We have a responsibility to teach and reach all students, …

Army quickly bans white Minnesota teens who posed in KKK hoods and blackface
A photo circulated by high school students in Minnesota shows what appear to be teenagers wearing a highly racist costume, reports the Med City Beat.

The image shows two students in KKK robes, displaying a Nazi salute. The conceit of the costume appears to be that the Klansman have apprehended a black man—that’s the third student, who’s in blackface.

John Marshall High School, where at least two of the teenagers were students, issued a statement condemning the costume. “The social media post is not a reflection of what our district students and staff believes and feels,” the district said in the statement, which was also sent out to local media. “We will use this as an opportunity to talk, educate, and grow as a community as we work to become even stronger and more inclusive to all students.”

Meanwhile, an Army recruiter at the school said they were not welcome to join the US armed forces.

Oprah says the blood of lynching victims ‘seeped into my DNA’ in stunning speech for Stacey Abrahams

Oprah says the blood of lynching victims ‘seeped into my DNA’ in stunning speech for Stacey Abrahams
In an impassioned speech for Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, Oprah Winfrey spoke about the importance of voting for groups that were barred from doing so in the past.

She recalled a story from Rev. Otis Moss Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, who described his father’s struggle to vote for the first time. He woke up, put on his only suit and tie and walked six miles to the polling location. He was told to go into a garage and when he got there, they told him, “Boy, you’re at the wrong place. You need to go to Mountville.” He walked another six miles and was told again he was in the wrong place.

“And I picture him walking from dawn to dusk in his suit, his feet tired, getting to the Rosemont School and they said, ‘Boy, you’re too late,'” she continued. “The polls are closed. He never had a chance to vote. By the time the next election came around, he had died.”

"They are not ‘former slaves’" GOP Rep. Mark Sanford on why Haitian babies born in US don’t deserve birthrights

"They are not ‘former slaves’" GOP Rep. Mark Sanford on why Haitian babies born in US don’t deserve birthrights
Outgoing South Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Sanford on Wednesday insisted that some babies born in the U.S. — from places like Haiti — do not deserve to be granted birthright citizenship because the 14th Amendment was only intended to apply to descendants of slaves.

During a discussion on MSNBC about President Donald Trump’s plan to end birthright citizenship, Sanford argued that the constitution did not apply to immigrants when it said all “persons” born in the U.S. have the right to be citizens.

“What do you make of the suggestion that birthright citizenship can be revoked with the stroke of a pen?” MSNBC host Craig Melvin asked the South Carolina Republican.

“I would find that hard to believe,” Sanford replied. “I’m not a fan of birthright citizenship. But I think it’s much more complex than the stroke of a pen.”

“Why are you not a fan of it?” Melvin wondered.…

A Ferguson protestor’s son was found dead near their St. Louis County home last month, the Associated Press reported.

Melissa McKinnies thinks her her son, Danye Jones, was murdered, the AP reported, but police are investigating it as a suicide.

“They lynched my baby,” Jones’ mom wrote on Facebook, according to the AP.

Facebook has since removed the post, the AP reported, but screen shots of it are now circulating across social media. The post included graphic photos of Jones hanging from a white piece of cloth. He appears to be next to a tree.

McKinnies’ post has stirred controversy about how Jones really died. Was he lynched? Or was it suicide?

The St. Louis County Police Department confirmed to McClatchy that officers responded to the home at about 6:10 a.m. on Oct. 17. They were responding to a “report of a suicide,” spokesman Sgt. Shawn McGuire said in a written statement.
