51 years ago today, on December 4, 1969, Chicago police, in concert with the FBI, assassinated Fred Hampton. Fred Hampton was only 21 years old. Hampton’s assassination was part of COINTELPRO, the counter-revolutionary program that identified Black liberatory movements as the greatest threat to the United States and worked to disrupt and destroy movements by any means necessary, including assassination. The designation of “Black Identity Extremists” as a threat by the FBI last year is a continuation of the anti-Black-liberation orientation of the FBI. • Fred Hampton was a dynamic and powerful leader who leaves us many lessons today. Hampton emphasized the need for dedicated political education to go along with the movement, citing the rise of Papa Doc in Haiti who was a successful revolutionary who turned into a terrible oppressor.
