A new study puts numbers behind what many Black folks already know: seeing Black people killed by the police is truly traumatic. The study , “Police Killings And Their Spillover Effects On The Mental Health Of Black Americans: A Population-Based, Quasi-Experimental Study,” was published via the online version of medical journal The Lancet yesterday (June 21).

In a time when 911 calls involving mental illness are up 227 percent since the late 1990s and at least a quarter of all police-involved killings involved people with mental illnesses, the documentary makes the case that law enforcement officers are typically not equipped to be the first responders in these situations.
