White college student charged with making false rape claims against Black football players rolls her eyes at her sentencing Nikki Yovino  may have plead guilty to making false rape claims against two football players at a Connecticut college – but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s remorseful. The former  Sacred Heart University  student claimed she was raped by two men during a party in 2016, but then later admitted to making up the allegations because she wanted a potential love interest to feel sympathy for her. She  shocked witnesses  when she rolled her eyes in court as one of her victims spoke about how her false allegations ruined his life. The two students she accused had remained anonymous up until Thursday. One of the men,  Malik St. Hilaire , stepped forward to read a victim impact statement to the courtroom. In his statement St. Hilaire explained how Yovino’s false claims got him expelled from school. “I went from being a college student to sitting at home be

White Sox Kopech apologizes for racist, homophobic tweets

White Sox Kopech apologizes for racist, homophobic tweets CHICAGO — White Sox rookie pitcher Michael Kopech has apologized for racist and homophobic tweets he posted as a 17-year-old and has since deleted. The tweets from 2013 surfaced Tuesday as Kopech made his major league debut. “I had to delete some stuff,” Kopech told the Chicago Sun-Times on Thursday. “Things I said that were immature and inappropriate. I used some poor language in there. Obviously, I’m trying to be looked at as a role model and the last thing I want to do is have some kid look at what I’m saying and take it the wrong way. “It’s unfortunate that I was ever at that point mentally, but it’s not who I am now. Yeah, I cleaned some tweets up and tried to get rid of them. But, obviously, people saw them. It’s not who I am now and it’s not who I want to be. It was something I did in high school, and with everything I’ve gone through in pro ball the last five seasons I feel like a big part of my career was

Adam Catzavelos apologises for racist South African rant A South African man has apologised for the "unspeakable pain" he has caused after making a racist slur in a video widely shared on social media. Adam Catzavelos filmed himself on a beach, saying it was "heaven on earth" as there were no black people there. In the video, he said a derogatory term used historically by white people to denigrate black South Africans. He said he felt "total shame" seeing it again and such "stupid comments" stalled the healing of racial tensions. Georgia superintendent recorded in racist rant

Georgia superintendent recorded in racist ran A Georgia schools superintendent accused of using racist language in two recorded conversations and of discriminating against a black employee has been placed on administrative leave. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Buford School System placed Superintendent Geye (pronounced GUY) Hamby on leave effective Tuesday. News outlets reported Tuesday that the race-discrimination lawsuit says Hamby repeatedly used slurs to refer to black workers at a construction site, saying he wanted to kill them. The plaintiff, 66-year-old Mary Ingram, worked for the district for nearly two decades before she was fired in 2017. She says she was discriminated against for speaking up for the black community at school board meetings. Hamby declined to comment on the advice of district counsel. School board attorney Walt Britt says the recordings' authenticity hasn't been determined.

A Black Teen Was Assaulted After Criticizing a Confederate Flag at a Country Music Festival

A Black Teen Was Assaulted After Criticizing a Confederate Flag at a Country Music Festival When a black teenager saw three young men flying a Confederate flag from their pickup truck at a music festival, he spoke out. But they didn’t want to hear it, with one man jumping from the Ford and assaulting the teen, according to  local police . On Sunday night in Brownsville, Oregon, at the Willamette Country Music Festival — which  featured  artists including Lady Antebellum and Kid Rock — an argument broke out between the 18-year-old and three men driving through the festival’s camping area waving a large Confederate flag. “The victim who was walking in the area yelled something to the males about their flag because he did not like it,” a  press release  put out by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office said. “One male jumped out of the pickup and he and the victim exchanged further name-calling. The suspect hit the victim several times and then drove off.” The teen’s friends found

Prisoners nationwide go on strike to protest 'modern-day slavery'

Prisoners nationwide go on strike to protest 'modern-day slavery' Prison inmates nationwide plan to put pressure on the country's penal system by going on a two-week strike beginning Tuesday. The strike is timed to begin on the anniversary of the killing of jailed African American activist and inmate George Jackson. He was killed by a guard in 1971 after taking guards and two inmates hostage in a bid to escape from San Quentin State Prison in California.   The final day of the strike — Sept. 9 — also carries symbolism. That's the day in 1971 that the Attica Prison riots in New York began, eventually leaving over 40 people dead when police stormed in to re-take the facility. Prisoners leading the protests say the strike is aimed at ending what they call "modern-day slavery." Inmates complain they are paid pennies on the dollar per hour for labor. The event is spearheaded by  Jailhouse Lawyers Speak , a network of imprisoned prisoner rights advo

Chicago violence attract so much attention?I

Chicago violence attract so much attention? It is no longer news that the violence that plagued Chicago during the Aug. 3 weekend was one of the deadliest weekends in the past two years in the city, ending in a spree of gun violence that left 74 people shot, including 12 dead. In almost predictable fashion, news media picked up the story and ran with it, with the reports of the fatalities spreading into foreign media sites like the BBC, which quoted pastor and emergency administrator Donovan Price equating the city to a “war zone.” The story, like most stories surrounding Chicago’s gun violence, dominated the news cycle for a full 24 hours, maybe running into a second day. At this point, at least outside of the city, the chatter of what happened has ultimately simmered down, roiling underneath the silence until the next acts of violence shake the city. But does Chicago deserve this level of scrutiny and the constant associations of violence to its name? Is Chicago really that
