Washington State Abolishes the Death Penalty, Finding the Punishment ‘Racially Biased’ Washington state’s Supreme Court abolished the death penalty on Thursday on the grounds that it was applied randomly and “in a racially biased manner,” thus violating the state’s constitution. With the decision, Washington is now the 20th U.S. state to ban capital punishment. The case striking down capital punishment was brought forward by a black death row inmate, Allen Gregory. Colin Kaepernick Receives W.E.B. Du Bois Medal from Harvard Colin Kaepernick  was awarded the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal by Harvard University on Thursday.  The medal is  considered  "Harvard's highest honor in the field of African and African American studies" and is awarded "to individuals in the United States and across the globe in recognition of their contributions to African and African American culture and the life of the mind." Previous recipients of the honor include Muhammad Ali (2015) and Maya Angelou (2014), among others.  According to Pro Football Talk's  Mike Florio , the live stream of the award presentation ceased when Kaepernick stepped to the microphone to address the audience.  "Due to the current litigation of W.E.B. "Well, I can be very blunt about taking the knee. First of all, I'm an American. That flag is my flag," Brown told reporters at the White House Thursday afternoon. "The things that I've overcome in this country have made me a better person. I don't think that we should take knees in protest. ... I think we should work out our problems." Arkansas sheriff’s office forcing inmates to wear Nike shirts in mugshots to mock Colin Kaepernick: activist A Sheriff’s Department in El Dorado, Arkansas, reportedly forced inmates to pose for their mugshots in Nike t-shirts. According to criminal justice reform activist Shaun King, who first posted the mugshots, it was meant to protest the company’s new ad campaign starring former football player Colin Kaepernick. “The Sheriff in Union County, Arkansas is putting Nike t-shirts on people they arrest and making them wear them during mugshots,” King wrote on Twitter. “Source says it is to mock Nike and Colin Kaepernick. A Washington man attacked a black kitchen worker on sight at a Denny’s restaurant — and then fought with police officers trying to arrest him. The black cook said he went to a corner of the restaurant to take his break, and a customer — l a t e r i d e n t i f i e d as Rory French — immediately began using racial slurs against him, r e p o r t e d T h e N e w s T r i b u n e . The employee went back to the kitchen to get away from the angry man, who continued taunting the cook. “You are going down, I am going to kill you,” French allegedly said — punctuating each threat with a racial slur.
