Stop Asking Black People If You Can Touch Their Hair A recently viral video has reignited the debate about Black hair and the politics surrounding it. In a Twitter video that has amassed over 6.5 million views, a Black woman assumed to be named Gracie, is seen with her natural hair out, in what looks to be her workplace, as her presumably non-Black coworkers surround her and touch her hair in awe. One of the individuals in the video is heard saying “you’ve never seen natural Black hair?” Aside from the sanitary concerns that come with people touching your hair, the act of touching a coworker is wholly inappropriate and unprofessional. Even asking “can I touch your hair?” is inappropriate and should be prohibited. ‘I don’t understand what is so egregious about asking an employee to touch their hair’, you may wonder. You may also be thinking ‘but I really like her braids and want to see how they feel’ or ‘I’ve never seen an afro up close and wanted to see what the texture was like.’ It

Racism and ecological injustice combine in 'reckless, racist' Atlantic Coast Pipeline fight

We have a moral problem in this country when it comes to environmental injustice. Although it is not new, under the current administration, powerful and wealthy corporations are given free rein to despoil and destroy our sacred and treasured lands and threaten the health of our people. The Long History of the Anti-Abortion Movement’s Links to White Supremacists

White supremacists were already participants in the anti-abortion cause, as Loretta Ross wrote in the 1990s. In 1985, the KKK began creating wanted posters listing personal information for abortion providers (doxing before the Internet age). Randall Terry, founder of the anti-choice group Operation Rescue, and John Burt, regional director of the anti-abortion group Rescue America in the 1990s, adopted this tactic in the 1990s. Terry’s first wanted poster targeted Dr. David Gunn, who was murdered in 1993 in Pensacola, Florida. Gunn’s successor, Dr. John Britton, targeted by a Rescue America wanted poser, was killed in 1994. https://www.whytheracecardisplayed.com/post/the-long-history-of-the-anti-abortion-movement-s-links-to-white-supremacists

Op-Ed: Beyond #OscarsSoWhite, Hollywood needs to confront historic racism on the big screen

It’s important to understand that this isn’t about blaming an earlier generation for views common in its day or asking artists to know what tomorrow’s sensitivities might be. https://www.whytheracecardisplayed.com/post/op-ed-beyond-oscarssowhite-hollywood-needs-to-confront-historic-racism-on-the-big-screen
