Another victim of disgraced cop will have all charges dismissed
Yet another wrongly incarcerated man who was imprisoned by the work of scandal-plaguedNYPD Detective Louis Scarcella will be exonerated Tuesday, his attorneys said.
Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice ShawnDya Simpson is expected to dismiss all charges against John Bunn, who spent 16 years behind bars for a 1991 murder he didn’t commit.
“It has been a longtime coming, and it is bittersweet because he’s had to suffer for a long time,” Rebecca Freedman of The Exoneration Initiative said Monday on behalf of her client.
“It’s taken a long time in prison, on parole, in limbo — waiting for justice. And finally he’s going to be free, in the truest sense of the word.”
Simpson ordered a new trial for Bunn in November 2016, saying that now-retired Scarcella engaged in “false and misleading practices” when he was a member of NYPD. Nearly a dozen cases of Scarcella’s have been overturned amid allegations of misconduct.
