Black Girl Magic (#BlackGirlMagic) is a concept and movement that was popularized by CaShawn Thompson in 2013. The concept was born as a way to "celebrate the beauty, power and resilience of black women", as described by Julee Wilson from HuffPost, and to congratulate black women on their accomplishments. Referring to a speech made by Michelle Obama at the Black Girls Rock Awards...yada yada yada.
But does the truth fit the billing? How are black girls really doing? What are they doing thats so magical? Do they really rock? How? Now i understand the the boast comes from a race and gender that has been trample on for centuries. With the racism and sexism and what not. Being black and a woman cant be considered a lucky draw in any society. In my opinion the tagline comes from the resilience black women have shown. And to proclaim the many advancements, and advancements they've made even through all the obstacles. I get that. But i ask myself and now ask you, whats so magical about them?
Now i haven't hung around black 'girls' in a long time now. Being 39 years old, i have no reason to be.
Now the stories i read online tell me that black girls are amazing and can do anything and who are courageously changing the world.
But from what I see online and in black communities there's nothing magical about them at all. The vicious fights, the horrible attitudes, the disrespect, the preying on men with money (with no shame in bragging about it) the provocative clothing, the provocative dancing, the unnatural hair, the early motherhood and heavy reliance on the government are what my eyes see (i'm talking 13 and up).
Now you might be saying; oh. You judging many based on a few. But in my defense I've been around a long time now. And what i see in public and online is a sharp contrast from what these hashtags promote. To me, the most important question is...is there more black girls like what I've described earlier? Or are there more black girls succeeding and changing the world? If its the latter, that would be a real magic trick.
