Question The Answer
In the gut wrenching comment sections of social media, the topic of race reigns supreme as the most provocative. Eventually, the statistician come out of hiding. And negative statistics about a race or gender are use only to drive home a point. Or for the senders to make believe that they are intelligent and in-the-know on this particular topic (race). White 'social commentators' in comment sections across the web; use these stats as insults and excuses for differential treatment. Most of the info. used is common knowledge. Quick Google searches, followed by an even guicker return to the 'discussion' in a vigorous effort to discredit another persons point of view. Many of the statistics are true. But the context in which they are used isn't to educate or prove. But instead are used to boastful, degrade, and to taunting. Too often, painful statistics on the detrimental flaws of other races are generally used in debates that are besides the subject matter entirely. Regularly I read white people use depressing stats on Africans Americans only to make a point. Used as a 'Gotcha' retort to a counter argument, or used simply to make someone feel bad and make themselves feel superior. Stats like the high crime rate, the high violence rate, the high incarceration, the high unemployment rate, appalling abortion facts, and the low graduation rate of blacks (all of which are true). Are brought up just to simply Zing a guy in the comment section. This does nothing to help correct those terrible circumstances proven by statistics that are kept so readily available like a bullet in a chamber.
So the next time someone (online or off). Mention a static they've learned. Just reply...
'Those numbers are unfortunately true. But what are you doing to help solve the issue.?'
And you will get the same response I've gotten...nada.
