First black mayor in Montgomery, Alabama’s history takes office

Montgomery, Alabama’s first black mayor, Steven Reed, took office today. This historic moment for the city, which served as the first capital of the pro-slavery Confederacy, comes after its long, violent history of lynchings & systemic racism toward African Americans.
