(AP) The Black Power salute photo, one of the most influential protest images of all time, was captured 50 years ago when U.S. sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos stepped onto the world stage during the Summer Olympics in Mexico City. It was Oct. 16, 1968. Smith had just won gold and Carlos had taken bronze in a blazing 200-meter dash. Australian sprinter Peter Norman, who had won silver, stood to their right. When "The Star-Spangled Banner” began to play, Smith lowered his head and raised his right fist. Carlos raised his left. Life magazine photographer John Dominis raised his lens. The Price Of Protest

The Price Of Protest Today marks the 50th anniversary of Tommie Smith, John Carlos and Peter Norman’s iconic protest at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. I was only a few months old at the time, but that moment, when Smith, Carlos and Norman brought international attention to social justice issues in America, has had a lasting impact on me. My career has taken me to many different places, but every time I begin a new venture, there is one constant you’ll see in my office; the powerful picture of Smith and Carlos standing on the podium raising a fist, covered in a black glove, along with Australian Peter Norman, proudly wearing the Olympic Project for Human Rights badge, standing in front of them. The decision to take a stand by Smith, Carlos and Norman had consequences, especially financial. “Oh, the fallout,” Smith remembered in an interview with USA Today. “I could not find a job when I got back. All the promises and all the endorsements disappeared. T

Wisconsin cops smash into black woman’s car with guns drawn after she arrives early to job interview: lawsuit A Wisconsin woman showed up early one morning for a job interview when a police cruiser smashed into her vehicle and officers jumped out with guns drawn. Robin Anderson said she feared for her life as officers ordered her to crawl over broken glass and out of her car, and then handcuffed her,  reported the  Journal Sentinel . “Don’t move or they’ll shoot you,” Anderson told herself. Glendale police later blamed the incident on a case of mistaken identity, and the department apologized to Anderson’s father and paid to replace her broken window, but not the dents in her car. The 20-year-old Anderson was parallel-parked Dec. 20, 2017, in her Hyundai, with cars on either side of hers, outside a cell phone store near an Applebee’s restaurant at Bayshore Town Center. Anderson had arrived early for her job interview, and the restaurant’s doors were still locked. Pol

Parents charge Catholic school with racism after son is taunted with racial slurs and white kid draws him as a monkey

Parents charge Catholic school with racism after son is taunted with racial slurs and white kid draws him as a monkey Parents Marvin and Kenya Marshall filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the North District of Alabama, Southern Division saying their son was harassed with racial slurs while at Prince of Peace Catholic School. According to the lawsuit, a white student made a video using the N-Word and was heard saying “escaped my slave house.” The parents also complained that the harassment went on for about a year and that the student drew a monkey picture depicting their son. An attorney for the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, John Whitaker released a statement regarding the incident. “Recently one of our students was videoed using a racial slur. Although it was impossible to tell to whom the slur was directed, given the ethnic diversity of the school, we took the matter seriously,” he wrote. “He had violated school rules and was disciplined accordingly. Sadly, he

White woman tries to block a black man from entering his own apartment — then calls the cops on him A  video released over the weekend showed a white woman tried to block a black man from entering his own apartment because she apparently believed he was some kind of criminal. Local news station KMOV reports  that St. Louis resident D’Arreion Toles was trying to enter his apartment on Friday night when he was confronted by a white woman who lived in the same building and who was about to go walk her dog. The white woman proceeded to stand in a doorway to prevent Toles from entering the building and demanded to know what unit he lived in. He refused to give her that information, but he did show her a key fob to prove that he really lived in the building. This wasn’t enough for the woman, however, and she proceeded to follow Toles all the way up to his apartment, where she watched him use his keys to open up the door. “Have a good night, ma’am,” he told the woman
