Charges filed against Oakland’s ‘Jogger Joe’ as case shows immense power of shared videos
Henry Sintay was arrested on suspicion of robbery on Monday, June 11, 2018, after he was confronted for throwing away a homeless man's possessions in Oakland.
An Oakland man who became known as “Jogger Joe” when he paused during a run to throw away a homeless man’s makeshift camp beside Lake Merritt was charged Wednesday with robbery in a case that displays the growing power of videos people share on social media in an effort to gain instant justice.
The episode — seen by many as a testament to community action, but by one of the jogger’s friends as a glimpse into online extremes — began Friday when 30-year-old Henry William Sintay was confronted by bystanders at the lake. They filmed him as he discarded the homeless man’s clothing and other possessions. Sintay responded that he was simply cleaning up heaps of trash.
