'We've Had Problems With Your Kind Before': Black Frat Files Racial-Discrimination Lawsuit Against Alabama Restaurant
The cardinals are working to bring more African American fans into the stadium. Cards President Bill DeWitt III says one focus is long term, investing time and money to get more African American children playing baseball.
“Hopefully those are seeds that blossom later for our fan base. I would think that [the current percentage of fans] probably matches the population of the city
DeWitt admits the percentage of ticket-buying fans who are African American is much lower. He says most fans today played baseball when they were young, so the Cards are trying to get more African American children on the field.
“I think our efforts the past 15 or 20 years have really been about the grassroots development of baseball, particularly with our Redbird Rookies program which is Cardinals Care’s biggest program that brings inner city kids and plays them on the fields that we build and organizes them,” he says.
To find out exact numbers, the Cards have launched a study this season using software that analyzes crowd shots at the stadium for demographics. Right now, the team has four players on the roster who are black.
