In an interview with TheBlaze's Glenn Beck, former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said that mass shooter Dylann Roof "hijacked" what people in South Carolina viewed as a symbol of "service, and sacrifice and heritage." Roof – whose June 2015 shooting at a Baptist church in Charleston led to the deaths of nine Black people – was convicted and sentenced to death for murder in 2017. Haley, who served as governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017, ordered that the Confederate flag be removed from statehouse grounds in 2015.
