UNC cops arrest 7 at Silent Sam rally as anti-racist protestors clash with Confederates
Police at the university of North Carolina arrested seven people during a protest of the confederate statue Silent Sam, which was ripped down on Monday night, NBC News reports.
The statue, which celebrates the Confederacy and was dedicated with a speech celebrating white supremacy, is in storage, but the university has announced that it will be put back up in the next three months.
The rally was tense as a barefoot man in Confederate garb and claimed the statue “wasn’t about racism or nothin’ like that” and as anti-racist protestors destroyed one Confederate flag and tried to burn another.
