WV among worst states for police shooting African-Americans
Police killing black Americans is one of the oldest forms of structural racism in the USA. The act traces its roots to slavery.” — The Lancet, June 21, 20118
From 2013-2016, 303 unarmed African-Americans were shot and killed by police in the U.S. Women accounted for 25 of these deaths. And, of the 50 states, West Virginia had one of the highest rates of African-American deaths (19 per million) by law enforcement, more than triple the shootings of white people (5.8 per million) by police (per 2017 report: “Mapping Police Violence”).
For those of you unfamiliar with The Lancet, it is a British academic medical journal, one of the most respected in the world. The above quote was a description of the findings of a recently released report, as described below.
In that June 12, 2018, Lancet report, researchers found: “Police killings of unarmed black Americans have a meaningful ... impact on the mental health of black Americans”; and: “Mental health impacts were not observed among white respondents and resulted only (in the black community) from police killings of unarmed black Americans.”
