51 years ago today, on December 4, 1969, Chicago police, in concert with the FBI, assassinated Fred Hampton. Fred Hampton was only 21 years old. Hampton’s assassination was part of COINTELPRO, the counter-revolutionary program that identified Black liberatory movements as the greatest threat to the United States and worked to disrupt and destroy movements by any means necessary, including assassination. The designation of “Black Identity Extremists” as a threat by the FBI last year is a continuation of the anti-Black-liberation orientation of the FBI.

Fred Hampton was a dynamic and powerful leader who leaves us many lessons today. Hampton emphasized the need for dedicated political education to go along with the movement, citing the rise of Papa Doc in Haiti who was a successful revolutionary who turned into a terrible oppressor. He used this as a cautionary tale of what can happen to revolution without political education. Hampton worked among the most disrespected and impoverished parts of the Black community, shunning talented tenth, top-down approaches to change. With the Black Panther Party, he developed community aid programs and was facilitating peace between Chicago gangs.

None of the murders who raided Hampton’s apartment faced any consequences.

Kwame Ture provides an insightful analysis of why the police killed Hampton. As Hampton showed us and as Ture constantly emphasized, we must be involved in organizations. We can’t do this alone. Separated and fragmented as 50 million individuals we aren’t a match for the forces of white hegemony*. Together we are more than enough.
