Mike Pence ignores female voters of color and falsely claims ‘the president won a majority of women’ in 2016

Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday falsely claimed that he and then-candidate Donald Trump “won a majority of women” during the 2016 election.

In an interview with Politico Playbook, the moderator noted that current polls find that two-thirds of women rate the Republican Part unfavorably.

Pence, however, shrugged off the polls.

“I gave up a long time ago trying to explain polls,” Pence said. “Virtually every poll this time two years ago said we were going to lose. I didn’t believe them then.”

“The president won a majority of women if memory serves in 2016 and I think it’s because he spoke to the issues that women and men cared most about,” he added. “Safety and security at home and abroad. A growing economy, opportunities in the workplace. Unemployment for women is now at a 65 year low in the United States.”

Pence’s claim follows repeated assertions by Trump that the Republican presidential ticket won 52 percent of women in 2016.

The claim, however, is false. The GOP running mates did receive 52 percent of the white women’s vote.

In fact, Trump and Pence were only able to capture 41 percent of all women voters in 2016.
