White Florida man opened fire on his Hispanic neighbors for checking if their home was damaged by hurricane
A Florida man who was previously praised for protecting homes from looters after Hurricane Michael hit is now facing charges that he was drunk and shooting at a Hispanic neighbor who only wanted to see how badly his home was damaged.
According to the Miami Herald, Carl Kuhn, 56, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and discharging a firearm while intoxicated over the incident which occurred at around 7 p.m. on Oct. 12, just two days after the powerful hurricane lashed the Bay County community.
After police responded to a report of shots fired, they found the intoxicated Kuhn who told them that he had yelled at the two men inside a black truck to leave, adding he had fired two shots into the ground to “scare them away.”
According to the driver of the truck, Martin Cisneros, he told police that he rents the house across from Kuhn’s for work and that he was trying to reach it when he was confronted by Kuhn.
Cisneros explained that he drove off after he heard Kuhn call him a racial slur and then fire two gunshots.
Police state that Kuhn was armed with a Smith and Wesson pistol that was strapped to his chest and a rifle when they arrived and was drunk.
“It was apparent to the deputies that he appeared intoxicated,” Bay County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Ruth Corley explained.
The sheriff’s office felt compelled to share exactly what transpired after a Miami Herald report hailed Kuhn as a hero, calling their reporting, “Factually incorrect.”
Kuhn was released after five days before being released on $5,000 bond.
