Idaho teachers mocked Mexicans and dressed up as a border wall for Halloween party
A group of Idaho teachers mocked Mexicans and dressed up as President Donald Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border during a Halloween party this week.
Local news station KTVB reports that photos of the teachers dressed both as a giant wall with a “Make America Great Again” slogan written across it and as Mexicans in mustaches and sombreros were actually posted on the school’s Facebook page before online backlash forced them to take them down.
Dr. Josh Middleton, the Middleton School District’s superintendent, posted a public apology on the school’s Facebook page in the wake of community outrage over the photos.
“I was shown those photos and [was] deeply troubled by the decision by our staff members to wear those costumes that are clearly insensitive and inappropriate,” he says in the video. “We are better than this. We embrace all students. We have a responsibility to teach and reach all students, period.”
Despite the offensive nature of their costumes, the superintendent said he didn’t think the teachers wore them intending to offend their students — although nearly ten percent of the population of Middleton is Latino.
